Pöttmes Castle
Pöttmes Castle (also: Gumppenberg Castle) is located in Pöttmes in the district of Aichach-Friedberg and is a protected monument. As a Hofmark castle, it was the manorial seat of the closed Hofmark Pöttmes, which even had a blood court. The lordship of Pöttmes has been owned by the noble Gumppenberg family since 1279. The noble family once had its seat in an imposing castle complex on the Gumppenberg northwest of the town, which burned down in July 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession and was never rebuilt.
Castle Complex+
The castle complex is a two-story, elongated three-wing building grouped around a small courtyard with an 18th-century Marian fountain (Brunnenhof), adorned with the coats of arms of the Gumppenbergs and the comital family von der Wahl. The core of the castle complex dates back to 1683. This year can be seen from the Gumppenberg and Haslang coats of arms, which are mounted above the gate passages. From one of the gate passages, one enters the castle chapel, built in 1691.
The north wing of the castle is the most prominent building on Pöttmes market square. Several rooms are furnished with stucco work from the late 17th century:
- In the corridor of the first upper floor hang numerous good family portraits from the 16th to 18th centuries, and stand beautiful Renaissance cabinets, chests, and chairs. On both sides of the corridor running through the middle of the building are the living rooms, some with excellent furniture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
The castle is partly surrounded by a wall in need of renovation. The castle and park are not accessible to the public.
