Pöllan Castle

The origins of the estate likely date back to the 14th century, when an earlier noble residence is presumed to have stood on this site. In 1598, Jakob Frankh von Pöllan and his wife sold the property to Christoph Haidenreich, the administrator of the Paternion lordship. Haidenreich began construction of the current castle around 1600. However, as a staunch Protestant, he came into conflict with the Counter-Reformation. He protected evangelical preachers and farmers and founded an evangelical school in 1605. After years of disputes, he was forced to sell the castle to the heirs of the Khevenhüller family in 1616. The Khevenhüllers also had to sell the property in 1629 due to the revocation of religious freedom for Protestants, after which Pöllan Castle passed into the possession of Hans Widmann.

Pöllan Castle is located in Paternion-Pöllan in the Villach Land district of Carinthia, Austria. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 607 m above sea level.

Today, Pöllan Castle is privately owned. The building is a unique example of late 16th-century architecture, with even the original scaffolding holes still discernible. It is a protected monument and is not accessible to the public.
