Peuerbach Castle

Museum

Peuerbach Castle, once a moated castle, stands in the center of the eponymous Upper Austrian town. Today, it presents itself as a horseshoe-shaped building complex that has preserved much of its original splendor and houses a significant cultural center.

History+

The castle's origins date back to 1366, when Count Ulrich II of Schaunberg initiated its construction. After the Schaunberg family died out in 1559, the castle changed hands and passed to the heirs of Anna von Starhemberg. A devastating fire in 1571 destroyed the castle along with its valuable library and the market of Peuerbach. Gundacker von Starhemberg had it rebuilt, but in 1626, during the Peasants' War, it was again stormed by rebellious farmers and burned down. After further changes of ownership and a period under the Strattmann family, who united Peuerbach into a majorate, the distinctive castle tower was demolished in 1777 due to minor structural damage. In 1831, parts of the castle were separated due to the risk of collapse, giving it its current form. In 1882, the market town of Peuerbach acquired the property and used it for various public institutions. In the 1970s, the dilapidated castle was on the verge of demolition but was saved and transformed into a museum and cultural center.

Today, Peuerbach Castle houses a museum dedicated, among other things, to the Peasants' War. It also serves as a cultural and event center, accommodating the district court and a post office branch. The horseshoe-shaped building encloses a covered inner courtyard, which serves as an extension of the modern Melodium cultural center. A Renaissance portal with knight figures and coats of arms adorns the entrance.
