The castle was first mentioned in 1185 as being owned by Daniel von Petzenkirchen. In 1364, the castle was owned by Franz Hager. Around 1510, the castle was described as dilapidated. Ownership changed in 1581 to Heinrich Hager, in 1628 to the Lords of Gabelkoven, in 1717 to the Barons of Riesenfels, in 1804 to the Hauer and Heindl families, and in 1823 to Emperor Franz I. In 1953, and from 1998 to 2002, the castle was extended and renovated.
