Perwang Castle

Perwang Castle is located in the municipality of Perwang am Grabensee in the district of Braunau (Rudersbergerstraße 4).

Perwang first appears between 963 and 976 in an exchange deed between Salzburg Archbishop Friedrich I and Count Aribo. At that time, Perwang fell to Salzburg and remained a farm of the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg for 400 years. In 1341 and 1391, the manor is documented as the property of Fridreich dem Noppinger. Then the brothers Seybot, Chunrad, Georg, and Christian von Nopping are mentioned. From the Noppingers, Perwang passed to Hanns Unterhofer on May 11, 1558, who died on December 20, 1595. The next owner was Sebastian Schettinger (Schütting, Schetting) zu Zell (died 1660). His widow Maria sold the property to Michaelbeuren Monastery on November 9, 1661. Since then, the small castle has served as a rectory.

The castle chapel was built by the Noppingers, and it was also their burial place; the Noppingers also had a church built in Perwang.

After the Peace of Teschen on May 13, 1779, Emperor Josef II traveled through the newly acquired Innviertel and spent the night of October 28, 1779, in the small castle. The state border at that time ran right through the rectory. A chair on which Josef I is said to have sat is still said to be present, as well as a portrait of the Emperor and his mother Maria Theresia, painted by Franz Nikolaus Streicher from Salzburg.

The small castle is in an appealing condition, which unfortunately cannot be said of the adjoining farm building.
