Pertenstein Castle

Pertenstein is a castle and a district in the town of Traunreut in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein, located on the banks of the Traun between Matzing and Traunwalchen.

In 1290, Engelbrecht from the Tachinger family built a castle opposite the Traunwalchen church on the banks of the Traun and named it Perchtenstein in honor of his wife Perchta von Stein. Around 1382, Pertenstein Castle passed by inheritance to the Toerring family, in whose possession it has remained to this day. Around 1600, under Barbara Lucia von Toerring-Stein, it was expanded into a stately country castle with a flourishing economy. During this time, Pertenstein was a comital Hofmark with the right to exercise lower jurisdiction. Pertenstein lost its significance over the centuries. In 1820, the Hofmark was converted into a patrimonial community of the second class in Matzing/Pertenstein, from which the municipality of Matzing emerged in 1848.

The Heimatbund Schloss Pertenstein (Local Heritage Association Pertenstein Castle) counteracts the impending decay, under whose direction the castle and the chapel located within it have been fundamentally renovated since the late 1960s.

Today, the castle and the Marstall Hall, located in a longitudinal wing of the estate and restored after a fire, are mainly rented and used for private celebrations such as weddings or company parties, but also for numerous cultural events such as concerts, cabarets, or exhibitions.
