Pegau Castle

After the secularization of Pegau Monastery, parts of the remaining building fabric were used for secular purposes. After the Thirty Years' War, the Electoral Saxon Office, formerly located at Kirchplatz, was moved here. When the Pegau Office was sold to Duke Moritz of Saxony-Zeitz in 1662, he and later his son Moritz Wilhelm used a part of the building as a summer residence until the extinction of the Zeitz secundogeniture in 1718 (hence the name Schlossplatz). In 1909, the old Amtshaus was demolished and the new district court building, completed in 1912 by the Pegau master builder Julius Patzschke, was erected, along with a prison building that was bombed during World War II. After 1949, children's and health facilities were located here (nursery, kindergarten, and rural outpatient clinic). In 1998, it was converted into a facility for assisted living ("Schlossresidenz").
