Pakein Castle

The well-maintained small castle is located on a hill west of Tainach. It is a horseshoe-shaped two-story building, with its main facade facing east. The oldest part is the east wing. It dates from the 17th century. Its ground floor is equipped with vaulted ceilings. The south and north wings are significantly younger. However, the east wing was also later rebuilt and modernized. Below the castle are stately farm buildings, indicating considerable agricultural property. The castle likely originated from an Edlingerhof, which is documented in 1602. It is one of many rural noble residences that had no historical significance and no special architectural features. They served as residences and the center of an estate economy. Until the 17th century, there is no documented information. Then a Siegismund Perger is mentioned as the owner. In the 18th century, a Maurer family lived here. As late as 1805, Josef and Margaretha Maurer were registered in the land register, but the estate passed to Thomas Janisch in the same year. From 1844 to 1850, Packein was owned by Heinrich Mayer, who sold it to Karl Graf Jenison Walworth. He appears to be the first noble owner. At that time, about 150 Joch of agriculturally usable land belonged to the castle. In 1886, Friedrich Freiherr von Gagern was the lord of the castle. He was followed in 1902 by Florian Pasetti von Friedensburg and in 1905 by Friederike and Georg Ernee. In 1938, Johann Ragger owned the estate, which passed to the Deutsche Umsiedlungs- und Treuhandgesellschaft in 1941. However, they sold it the very next year to Franz Buxbaum. The castle still belongs to his family.
