Oberstockstall Castle

Oberstockstall Castle is an irregular, two- to three-story complex with residential and economic buildings around a rectangular inner courtyard. The south wing connects to the church in the west. The three-story rubble stone building likely dates back to the 14th century in its core but was rebuilt several times from the early 16th century onwards. On the south side, two late Gothic window reveals from the early 16th century are still visible. A walled shoulder arch portal on the north side probably dates from the 14th century. The T-shaped adjoining three-story west wing has a stair tower on the courtyard side. The equally high, northern extension, an extension with different floor divisions, was built in the early 17th century. At the staircase, there is a secondarily relocated Renaissance portal with rosette decor. The two-story gatehouse with plastered corner quoins is accessible through a flat-arched entrance. On the north side are two-story residential and economic buildings. The upper floor of the residential wing can be reached from the courtyard via an external staircase and an estrade on pillar arcades. On the east side are single-story economic buildings.

In the west wing, there are several Renaissance portals as well as a secondarily relocated, Gothic shoulder arch portal. On the first floor, there is a barrel-vaulted room with a stucco ceiling from the first half of the 17th century.

On the south side of the castle stands the narrow, high-set chapel, equipped with buttresses, dating from around 1320. Its facade is pierced on the east by a two-light tracery window and on the north and south by a single-light tracery window each. It is accessible through a pointed arch portal on the north side. Below the gable, there is a cross-shaped opening. The roof turret with a gable helmet dates from the 16th/17th century. In the northwest corner stands a remarkable Gothic holy water basin with grotesque masks.

The interior is covered by a three-bay cross-rib vault on slender bundled services. The straight end is interpreted as a five-eighths end by diagonal corners. Further features include round keystones with bird reliefs, a continuous string course, and pointed arch seating niches.

The furnishings include a wall painting depicting Saint Christopher from the first half of the 14th century, an early Baroque altar with an altarpiece of the Good Shepherd, dated 1653, an oval top painting of the Assumption of Mary, a holy water basin with blind tracery from the construction period, and the Gothic stone figure of a knight.
