Oberstein Castle
Oberstein Castle, also popularly known as the "New Castle", is actually a medieval hilltop castle located above the upper district of Oberstein in Idar-Oberstein, in the Birkenfeld district of the Hunsrück.
Oberstein Castle lies west of the "Church Rock", a rugged rock reef above a rock church, the famous rock chapel of Idar-Oberstein, above the Nahe valley next to the ruins of Bosselstein Castle.
Oberstein Castle was built in 1320 and first mentioned in a document in 1330 as "the house above the house of stone", referring to the old Bosselstein Castle.
The castle was the permanent residence of the Counts of Daun-Oberstein, who emerged from the Lords of Oberstein, until 1624, and thereafter an administrative seat.
During the Reunion Wars, the four corner towers were demolished by French troops through blasting, and in 1855 the castle was destroyed by fire.
The complex has been continuously restored since 1981.

The castle complex consisted of four corner towers, a round keep in the inner courtyard, and a gatehouse with a late Gothic oriel window. The gatehouse was originally a two-story defensive pulpit that was also secured by a drop shaft. The restored rooms are now used for festive occasions.
