Obersalwey Castle
Obersalwey Castle, also known as Haus Obersalwey, is located in the municipality of Eslohe in the district of Obersalwey in the Hochsauerlandkreis. It is privately owned. A visit is not possible.
The building was constructed around 1540 and belonged to the noble family von Schade until 1908. The family had the complex rebuilt after a fire in 1834.
After the von Schades, the von Landsberg-Velen family owned it until World War II. From them, it passed to the Counts von Spee, who housed their forest administration there.
After extensive renovation in the 1970s, the buildings served as a castle hotel for five years. In 1984, the castle was placed under monument protection and is now used for private purposes.
Description+
The estate consists of a manor house and the buildings of the Obersalwey estate. The main house is a rectangular, white plastered building with two stories, covered by a high hip roof. At its northeastern corner stands a round tower with a polygonal spire, crowned by a weather vane. The manor house is structured by windows in seven axes. In the central axis, which is topped by a small triangular gable at eave height, is the simple main entrance, to which a two-flight outdoor staircase leads.
