Oberrot Castle

Oberrot is one of the oldest communities in the Limpurger Land, probably dating back to a Frankish foundation around the year 650. The place was first mentioned in a document in 788 as "Raodhaha". For several centuries, Oberrot was ruled by the knightly Lords of Rot. The nobles initially resided in a castle, the so-called Schlossbuckel, and later, befitting their status, in the still-preserved moated castle from 1290 in the center of the village. Around 1370, the Schenken von Limpurg acquired most of the Oberrot possessions and sovereign rights. In 1449, the castle was burned down in the South German Cities' War and subsequently rebuilt. In 1550, a new castle was built by the Vogt zu Oberrot. In 1571, ownership changed to Senft von Suhburg and from 1634-1707 to Senft von Elrichshausen. From 1738, the castle was referred to as the "Old Official Residence".
