The Old Town Hall in Görlitz is one of the most beautiful and historically significant buildings in the city. Its origins date back to the 14th century, and it has served as the administrative and political center of Görlitz for centuries.

The oldest parts of the Old Town Hall date back to around 1350. Over the centuries, the building has been repeatedly expanded and remodeled, reflecting various architectural styles.

Gothic Period

A predecessor building is already mentioned in 1285.

The core of the current building dates from the Gothic period. From this time, the impressive council hall with its ribbed vault and parts of the tower are preserved.

Renaissance Period

In the 16th century, the Old Town Hall was extensively rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The most striking element from this period is the magnificent Renaissance portal, created by Wendel Roskopf in 1531. The portal is richly decorated with sculptures and reliefs, depicting scenes from biblical and Görlitz history.

Baroque Period

Further modifications took place in the Baroque period, particularly in the interior. The council chambers received new furnishings and stucco decorations.

The Town Hall Tower is one of the landmarks of Görlitz. It was built in the 15th century and offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the city and the surrounding area. The tower houses a historic clockwork and a carillon.

Today, the Old Town Hall no longer serves as the seat of the city administration, which moved to the New Town Hall in the 19th century. However, it is still used for representative purposes and houses various cultural institutions and exhibition spaces. The historic council hall is regularly used for concerts, lectures, and other events.
