Originally, the castle served as the bailiwick seat for the Bishop of Constance before later passing into the possession of the city of Schaffhausen and serving as a residence for its bailiffs. While the gate tower and the surrounding wall date back to the Middle Ages, the other parts of the building were constructed in the 16th century, giving the castle its current appearance.
