Oberaufseß Castle

Oberaufseß Castle is located on the western edge of the Aufseß Valley above the village of the same name. Oberaufseß is a district of the municipality of Aufseß in the west of the Bayreuth district.

The castle consists of a residential building at the southeast corner and the former farm buildings. The entire complex is surrounded by an outer wall, which is reinforced at the corners by four round towers. The gatehouse is located on the north side of the complex. On the obtuse-angled south side there is another tower, built out like a bastion.

The name Oberaufseß is first mentioned in a document from 1326. However, the name does not refer to a castle, but only to the area.

In 1676, Aufseß Castle, later also called Unteraufseß, came into the possession of the brothers Friedrich and Karl Heinrich von Aufseß. Due to disputes between these two brothers, Karl Heinrich von Aufseß began building Oberaufseß Castle in 1690. The complex is a relatively strongly fortified castle for its time. In 1692, Bamberg troops tried in vain to conquer the castle. The castle is still owned by the Lords of Aufseß and serves as the family's residence.
