Nimritz Castle

Nimritz was first mentioned in a document in December 1074. A moated castle stood on the site of the still-preserved castle. The castle and church were probably once a single unit. In the 13th century, a ministerial family of Nimritz was mentioned, who were in the retinue of the Counts of Orlamünde and later became Wettin feudal lords. In 1383, the castle was owned by the Lords of Beulwitz, and in the 16th century, the Lords of Etzdorf were the owners. The Gothic building was rebuilt in 1560 and extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a multi-part Renaissance castle with a tower and a Baroque extension. In 1945, the von Bünau family was dispossessed and expelled by the communists. In 1946, a part with the tower was demolished. The castle is now back in private ownership; the building contractor Dr. Wulf Bennert renovated it with great effort and received the Thuringian Heritage Prize for it in 2006.
