Niedernfels Castle

The Franz von Sales School Niedernfels is a state-recognized private primary and secondary school in the Pedagogical Center Schloss Niedernfels, a castle in the village of Niedernfels west of Marquartstein in the Chiemgau region.

As early as 988, a manor house in Niedernfels was mentioned. In 1568, the castle was built by its new owner Augustin von Aham auf Valley in its current Renaissance style and named "Niedernfels" due to its "low location". In 1639, Rennerus von Fossa acquired the castle, which frequently changed owners in the following centuries. The approximately 20-meter-high square castle building with its two octagonal towers was extended in 1808 by a four-story annex. During the National Socialist era, the castle served as a so-called "Gauschule" (district school). In 1954, Schloss Niedernfels became the property of the Convent of the Sisters of the Visitation of Mary. In 1955, a primary school and boarding school were opened. In 1972, a day care center for boys and girls was opened. In 1997, the Catholic Youth Welfare of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising e.V. took over the sponsorship of today's Pedagogical Center Schloss Niedernfels. In 1998, a therapeutic day care group and 2 further therapeutically oriented student boarding groups were opened. In 2001, the entire castle underwent renovation. In 2004, an all-day program for grades 7 to 9 was introduced. A new gymnasium was inaugurated in 2006. In 2009, the Franz von Sales School moved into a high-quality equipped building.
