Niederhollabrunn Castle

The castle, located northwest of the parish church, documented since 1135, belonging to the Passau Cathedral Chapter from 1253, and under secular lords from 1789, is a two-story, two-wing complex with a 17th-century core. It underwent significant changes from the 18th to the 20th century, especially under Karl Graf Haugwitz in the 19th century.

The castle was originally built as a moated castle. The moats were filled in the 19th century. The oldest parts of the building are the mighty foundation walls of the north wing, which date back to the 12th century. The south wing was built in the 16th century. The castle was extensively renovated in the 17th century, and the two wings were connected by a connecting building. In the 18th century, the castle was baroqueized and received its present appearance. In the 19th century, under Karl Graf Haugwitz, the castle was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. The last major renovation took place in the 20th century, when the castle was adapted for use as a museum.

Today, the castle houses the municipal museum. It presents the history of the city and the region. The museum also has a collection of art and handicrafts. The castle chapel is used for concerts and other events.

A special feature of the castle is the castle garden, which was laid out in the 19th century. It is a landscape garden with old trees and various flowerbeds. The castle garden is a popular destination for walks and relaxation. Another special feature is the castle ghost, which is said to haunt the castle at night.
