Niederhaus Castle

Niederhaus Castle – the so-called Lower Castle – is a four-sided, two-story complex with a kinked east front. The core of the north wing dates from the 15th century. The former castle church, of which only a ruin remains, is located in front of the northwest corner.

The original castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Spitz. In 1285, the castle was first mentioned in a document. In 1409, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1620, the castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and subsequently rebuilt. In 1662, the castle burned down and was subsequently rebuilt. Further owners included the Lords of Kuefstein and the Counts of Dietrichstein.
