Niederberg Castle
The castle is a successor building to the manor farm of the Cologne Cathedral Deanery. The Cologne Cathedral Dean owned a manor in Niederberg, which was called Berghe or "Berghe prope Vrisheim" in the 12th century, with a manor farm that was administered by a reeve, called Villicus.
The first castle house was built on oak piles. During restoration work in 1970, these still preserved piles, on which the current castle house also stands, were discovered in the castle moat.
Among the frequently changing owners of the castle was Anton Guffanti of Cologne. Extensive renovations took place in 1935 under Consul von Fuchs, who fundamentally renewed the castle house inside and out. After the regulation of the Rotbach, he had the moats cleaned and a fresh water supply created.
