Neuweier Castle

Schloss Neuweier is an estate built as a moated castle in the 12th century. It is located at the entrance to the Baden-Baden district of Neuweier at the foot of the Mauerberg.

The origins of the manor house, which probably stands on Roman foundations, date back to the 12th century. At that time, the Knights of Bach ruled Schloss Neuweier for 330 years. They built it as a Gothic moated and defensible lowland castle.

In 1525, the castle was severely damaged in the German Peasants' War. Philipp von Dalberg rebuilt the castle in 1548 in the Renaissance style, after the last Knight of Bach bequeathed the castle to the Cronberg-Dalberg family. With the extinction of the Dahlbergs in 1615, the husbands of the last daughters, Baron Eltz and Baron Knebel von Katzenelnbogen, inherited the castle, which later passed entirely into the Knebel family. Through the new inhabitants, the Riesling grape came from Franconia to Neuweier, which was cultivated on the terraces of the Mauerberg. Neuweier also received the right to bottle in Bocksbeutel as a result.

During the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689 and other wars in the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle repeatedly suffered severe damage.

After the death of Eberhard von Katzenelnbogen in 1816, who was the last noble lord of the castle, the castle changed hands several times until the August Rössler family acquired the property for 115 years in 1869. After the family's heirs had no interest in using the castle in 1984, no new owner was found for nine years. In 1993, the current owners, Helmut and Gisela Joos, finally brought the castle back to life. The dilapidated area had to be completely renovated and modernized.
