Neuses Castle

Schloss Neuses am Sand is a former moated castle in Neuses am Sand, a district of Prichsenstadt in the Kitzingen district (Lower Franconia in Bavaria). Since 1998, it has served as a wellness hotel and restaurant with an attached winery under the name Wörners Schloss. Of the original four-tower complex, two of the outer towers and the stair tower in the inner courtyard are still preserved.

The castle of Neuses am Sand was owned by Hans Fuchs von Bimbach and Hermann von Seinsheim in 1498. Later it passed entirely to the Fuchs family, whose coat of arms, restored in 2005, can be seen at the entrance. In 1643, the manor came into the possession of Hans Wolf von Wolfsthal. His son Philipp Gaston Graf Wolf von Wolfsthal, who built Schloss Zeilitzheim, married Amalie Magdalena Fuchs von Bimbach, who brought Schloss Neuses into the marriage as a dowry. The weather vane that today adorns the spire in the castle's inner courtyard comes from Philipp von Wolfsthal. It is marked with the year 1682 and Philipp's monogram. On it, the horse appears for the first time in the coat of arms of the Wolfsthal family.

Since Philipp von Wolfsthal left no heir, the lineage died out with him in 1717. The property passed to the Counts of Schönborn-Wiesentheid due to an inheritance contract, to whose county Neuses am Sand also belonged. To this day, the coat of arms of the Wolfsthal family adorns the portal of the stair tower.

In 1900, the castle and its agricultural land were leased to the Breitwieser family. Three of the daughters were married to Karl Rasp (tenant of Schloss Bimbach and co-purchaser of Schloss Neuses (60%)), to Jakob Funk (son Friedrich Funk bought Schloss Neuses for 40% in 1936) and to Jakob Wörner (tenant of Lisberg). Heinrich Wörner, a son of Jakob Wörner, first bought the Rasp family's shares in 1949 and shortly thereafter also the 40% of his cousin Friedrich Funk, with whom he had managed the farm until then.

In 1969, Albrecht Wörner took over the castle together with the agricultural business and established a winery and hotel there. The previous tenant of the castle was the Popp family.
