History+
The origins of what is now Neuschwanstein Castle trace back to the Middle Ages, when two smaller castle complexes existed on this site. However, these fell into ruin over the centuries. King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who spent part of his childhood nearby, decided in 1868 to build an idealized knight's castle here. Construction began in 1869 under the direction of architects Eduard Riedel and Georg von Dollmann, based on designs by the theater painter Christian Jank. Ludwig II was only able to inhabit the castle for a few months, as he died in 1886 before the construction was fully completed. Originally known as “Neue Burg Hohenschwangau” (New Hohenschwangau Castle), it received its current name after the king's death. Today, the Free State of Bavaria owns the castle.
