The History of Windhaag Castle+

The castle was built in 1654 by Joachim von Windhaag. In 1882, the municipality of Neumarkt an der Ybbs bought the property.

From the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period+

The first documented mention of a "Veste Windhaag" dates back to 1278. At that time, it was a fortified tower house, probably built by the Lords of Windhaag, a local noble family. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, often through marriage or inheritance. In the 15th century, it was expanded into a small residential castle, reflecting the growing prosperity of its owners.

The Windhaag Family and Their Influence

The Windhaag family played a significant role in the regional history. They were vassals of the powerful Babenberg dukes and later the Habsburgs. Their influence extended to land ownership, jurisdiction, and military service. Several members of the family held important positions at court or in the church. The construction of the castle in 1654 by Joachim von Windhaag marked a new era for the estate, transforming it into a baroque residence.

The Castle in Modern Times+

After the municipality of Neumarkt an der Ybbs acquired the castle in 1882, it served various public purposes. Initially, it housed the local school and administrative offices. Later, parts of the building were used as residential units. In the mid-20th century, extensive renovation work was carried out to preserve the historic structure. Today, Windhaag Castle is a cultural center and a popular venue for events and exhibitions.

Restoration and Public Use

The restoration efforts focused on maintaining the original architectural features while adapting the interior for modern use. The former ballrooms and salons have been converted into event spaces, while the historic chapel is still used for religious ceremonies. The castle's park, with its ancient trees and picturesque views, is open to the public and offers a tranquil retreat. Windhaag Castle stands as a testament to centuries of history and continues to be a vibrant part of the community.
