Neugebäude Castle

Construction of Schloss Neugebäude began in 1569 under Emperor Maximilian II, who considered the project his favorite undertaking. Rumor has it that the site was chosen because Sultan Süleyman's tent castle was said to have stood there in 1529. The complex, which also included a menagerie, was conceived as a total work of art. After Maximilian II's death in 1576, his son Rudolf II continued construction with little interest. By 1600, initial signs of decay were already evident. In 1683, the castle survived the Turkish siege unscathed, but was set on fire during a Kuruc invasion in 1704, destroying the imperial menagerie. Later, Maria Theresia had many valuable elements, including columns and fountains, transferred to Schönbrunn Palace. From 1744, the castle served as an ammunition depot and underwent several renovations. After World War I, it became the property of the City of Vienna and housed the Central Cemetery's crematorium from 1922. During World War II, it was used as a factory hall. It was only in the 1970s that it was placed under monument protection, and initial renovation work began in the 2000s.

Schloss Neugebäude is situated in Vienna-Simmering, within the urban area of Vienna, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 166 m above sea level.

Today, the main building of Schloss Neugebäude is used for cultural events. Despite its partially dilapidated condition, many historical details such as door and window frames made of Kaiserstein, as well as a stable with its original brick floor, are still preserved. The northern garden area is currently being excavated and redesigned.
