Neuenhof Castle

The manor complex, known as the "Neuer Hof" (New Court), was the center of the village and was protected by a small castle, presumed to be in the area of the present-day castle, built on a spur on the high bank of the Werra. Its last visible remnant – the so-called Kemenate – was only removed in 1962. After the knights Johann and Wenzel von Stein initially sold their "Neuer Hof" in 1405 (first mention of the village) to a knight Helwig von Rakgus, the Lords of Reckrodt acquired the property from his heirs as early as 1411. Until 1777, the present-day village developed under the judicial rule of the Reckrodt family. They were followed by the Riedesel family, and in 1863, through inheritance, by the Franconian noble family von Rotenhan. The latter had the castle, built in Neo-Gothic style next to the church, constructed in 1863. The castle is now privately owned.
