Neuenburg Castle

The history of Neuenburg Castle is closely linked to the Ludowingians, who arrived in Thuringia from Mainfranken around 1030. Ludwig the Springer, who acquired the area around Freyburg and Naumburg through marriage, had the 'New Castle' built here shortly after 1085 to consolidate his position in the Saale-Unstrut region. Until the extinction of the Ludowingians in 1247, Neuenburg was one of the most important and at times largest castles of the Landgraves of Thuringia. It hosted prominent figures such as Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia, and the poet Heinrich von Veldeke completed his Eneasroman here around 1185. After 1247, the castle passed into the possession of the Wettins and initially lost significance. Under Duke Wilhelm III of Saxony, new construction began around 1440, and in the mid-16th century, the complex was converted into a hunting lodge by Elector August of Saxony. It served this purpose until 1746. After 1815, Neuenburg became Prussian state property and developed into a popular excursion destination. Following a closure during the GDR era, the castle was extensively renovated after 1990 and reopened to the public.

Today, Neuenburg Castle houses a museum that offers visitors insights into its rich history and architecture. Additionally, a restaurant invites guests to linger. The complex is easily accessible and a popular destination for history enthusiasts and day-trippers.
