New Barenaue Castle
Neu Barenau Castle is a two-story castle in Bramsche. The von Bar family had the two-story manor house built in Neo-Romanesque style between 1857 and 1862 below Kalkrieser Berg by the Hanoverian architect Hermann Hunaeus in the English stately country house style. They previously lived in the moated castle Alt Barenaue, which is now located on the other side of the Mittelland Canal.
The von Bar family owned a collection of Roman coins found by farmers in the area. On behalf of Theodor Mommsen, the Berlin numismatist Julius Menadier recorded 1 Aureus, 179 Denarii, and 2 Asses in 1884. Mommsen then suspected the location of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the Kalkrieser-Niewedder depression at Kalkrieser Berg. The collection was lost during the occupation by Allied troops in 1945.
Current Use+
The von Bar family no longer lives in the house. It is rented to six single households. Among the attractions near the castle is a 2,000 m² wild romantic garden with old trees.
