Nääs Castle
Nääs Castle, an impressive complex in the municipality of Lerum, approximately 25 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg in Sweden, is picturesquely situated above Lake Sävelången. It is not only a historical building but also an outstanding example of the stately furnishing style of the late 19th century in Sweden.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 16th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, it underwent extensive renovation in the Neoclassical style. In 1868, August Abrahamsson acquired the estate and began redecorating the interiors. Together with his nephew Otto Abrahamsson, he founded a craft school in 1872, specializing in the training of craft teachers, which gained international recognition for its innovative pedagogy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After Abrahamsson's childless death in 1898, the castle and its surrounding estate passed into the possession of a foundation that continued the operation of the craft school. While the service rooms were used for school purposes, the other rooms of the castle remained preserved in their late 19th-century appearance. In 1991, Nääs Castle was declared a cultural monument. The craft school was even mentioned in Selma Lagerlöf's novel "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils".
