Müllerhof Castle (Leichlingen)

The manor house of Bendeleben is a historic building that has undergone several transformations over the centuries. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but the current appearance is largely shaped by the Baroque and Neoclassical periods.

From Medieval Castle to Renaissance Palace

The first documented mention of a fortified building in Bendeleben dates back to the 12th century. At that time, it was a moated castle, probably built by the Lords of Bendeleben. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was expanded and rebuilt by various noble families.

In the 16th century, under the ownership of the von Tütchenrode family, the medieval castle was transformed into a Renaissance palace. Remains of this period, such as parts of the foundation walls and cellar vaults, are still preserved today.

Baroque and Neoclassical Transformations

Its current appearance was largely given to the manor house in the 18th century. Under the ownership of the von Arnim family, extensive Baroque alterations were carried out. The main building was raised, and the characteristic mansard roof was added. The interior was also redesigned in the Baroque style.

In the early 19th century, further changes were made in the Neoclassical style. These included the addition of a portico with columns and the redesign of some interior spaces. The surrounding park was also laid out during this period, following English landscape garden principles.

The manor house is a two-story building with a mansard roof. The facade is structured by pilasters and cornices. The central risalit is emphasized by a portico with four columns and a triangular pediment.

Inside, some historic rooms have been preserved, including a Baroque hall with stucco decorations and a Neoclassical salon. The building is surrounded by a spacious park with old trees, ponds, and various garden structures.

The manor house is now privately owned and cannot be visited.
