Moosburg Castle (Güttingen)

The origin of Moosburg as a Staufer-era complex of the Barons von Güttingen can be assumed to be in the first half of the 13th century, or shortly after 1250. There is no documentary evidence, and the structural clues are not conclusive.

Three contemporary depictions from 1692 and 1742 in the Zelgkarte (Seezelg) and from 1782 provide reliable information. From these depictions, the layout and its former appearance can be discerned.

• In 1815 it is reported: The old Moosburg was surrounded by a double rampart. The inner rampart was walled towards the castle. The castle formed a masonry block of considerable height, on top of which the dwelling was located.
• It is further reported: At the edge of a forest, very close to the lake, stands on an elevation an old, solid castle, with few small window openings, surrounded by a double moat.
• 1804 Acquisition of the property by the Canton of Thurgau.
• 1840 - 1945 Demolition of Moosburg and new construction of the neoclassical castle on the foundations of the old castle by the owner Baron von Barion from Northern Germany.
• 1893 Ernst Greeff acquires Moosburg from the Basel citizen Theophil Preiswerk - since then in the possession of the Greeff family. Today Andreas Greeff operates the estate. Although it no longer appears in its previous form, as it was broken down from its former height to about 30 feet some years ago and has received a rural superstructure instead.
