Mörtenegg Castle
Mörtenegg Castle, also known as Martinseck or Dinzlschloss, is located in the St. Martin district of Villach.
The castle was built by Sigmund Khevenhüller around 1550 on the site of a free Khevenhüller court, documented back to the 15th century. In 1622, Hans Widmann appears as the owner of the castle, followed by the Grotta von Grottenegg family in 1637, and Dr. Ignaz Dinzl after 1874. In 1944, Else Dinzl bequeathed the castle to the city of Villach. From 1953 to 2004, the castle served as an apprentice dormitory for the Carinthian provincial government. Today, the castle is used for youth and cultural activities.
Architecture+
The castle is a medium-sized, cubic building with three stories and corner oriels. Above the entrance portal is a small balcony with a round-arched door, above which the coats of arms of Siegmund Khevenhüller and his wife Katharina von Gleinitz can be seen. In 1985, three sundials were uncovered.
In the vaulted entrance hall with ornamental, marble capitals, a stone relief plaque with a Pietà from 1509 is affixed to the left wall. The central hall on the ground floor has a cross-rib vault. The large hall on the upper floor has ornamental capitals and a portal with the Khevenhüller coat of arms. The southern oriel room has a stucco ceiling.
On the street side, the castle has two round defensive towers. In the northeastern tower, 16th-century wall paintings were uncovered in 1978.
