The origin of the castle lies in an old fortress, which was built around 1100 to 1200 by the Lords of Möggingen. The property changed hands in 1278 to the Lords of Bodman, later to Wolf von Homburg, to Hans Conrad von Bodmann-Möggingen, to Albert Bernhard, in 1900 to Countess Maria Walderdorff, and in 1935 back to the von Bodman family.
During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was plundered and burned down by French and Württemberg troops. In 1648, the castle was rebuilt. In 1834, the castle was reconstructed into its current form. Since 1946, the Radolfzell Bird Observatory of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology has been housed in the castle.
