Möderndorf Castle

Möderndorf is first mentioned in a document in 1164. At that time, Bishop Roman of Gurk bought the "predium Gebhardi Moderndorf dictum" from Margrave Engelbert of Istria.

In the second half of the 13th century, there was a small manor here, which was fortified like a tower in the 14th century. A family also named themselves after Moderndorf at that time. In 1346, a "Nicla von Moderndorf" appears in a pledge document. The castle already possessed low jurisdiction in the 14th century. Through Gertrude von Mörderndorf, wife of Otto von Keutschach, Möderndorf came to the Keutschachers, who were lords of Tanzenberg from 1516 to 1637. Under them, the castle was expanded into a palace.

In 1607, Siegmund von Keutschach pledged Tanzenberg, including the associated Möderndorf, to Adam von Hallegg. In 1660, the last Keutschacher, Wolf Leonhard, died. As a result, Möderndorf came to his son-in-law Max Freiherr von Jabornegg. He also had the castle further expanded. The Jaborneggs were followed by the Freiherrn von Schluga as owners. In 1803, Moderndorf was acquired by Franz Xaver Wagner. He was followed by Matthias Perko (1816), Karl Perko (1834), Anton Capellari (1866), Katharina Plappart (1866), Julius Ritter von Plappart (1883), Barbara Kaschütz (1896), Margarethe Kuchling (1903), Peter Kuchling (1942) and the Matschnig family (1962).
