Möchling Castle

Möchling Castle in the municipality of Gallizien was owned by St. Paul's Abbey in Lavanttal from 1123 to 1770 and was the seat of the administrator.

The building, late medieval in its core, was rebuilt in Baroque style after a fire in 1666. The building consists of two residential floors and an original storage floor with a gabled roof. The facades are structured by stucco decoration with flat pilaster strips interrupted by continuous, weakly profiled cornices. The main portal on the courtyard side features wide, stone jambs and a profiled canopy. On the northeast facade, a chamfered round-arch portal from the 16th century provides access to the cellar. Some windows have wrought-iron window grilles from the 16th century. On the ground floor, there is a transverse, two-aisled entrance hall with a small cross vault, supported by a rectangular central pillar. The ballroom on the first floor has an artistically valuable stucco ceiling. The central ceiling painting consists of hardly decipherable depictions and several coats of arms, including that of Abbot Albert Reichard (1677–1727). The other eight cartouche-shaped small ceiling paintings with depictions from the life of Hildegard von Stein are framed by rich stucco decoration, attributed to the brothers Gabriel and Johann Peter Wittini.
