Mistelbach Castle

Mistelbach Castle is located in the Mistelbach district of the municipality of Buchkirchen near Wels.

In place of the present castle, there was a moated castle in the Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in 1343 as property of the Strachner family. At that time, a Jakob Strachner declared that he had received the fortress as a fief from the Schaunberger family. After the Schaunberger family died out, the Starhemberger family inherited the feudal sovereignty over Mistelbach. The Strachner family was followed by the Anhanger family, and for a short time, a Weikert von Polheim was also a Schaunburg vassal. In 1454, Siegmund Kirchberger, who had accompanied Count Bernhard Schaunburg on his journey to the Holy Land, received the castle as a life fief. In 1591, Baron Karl von Gera was the owner. In 1599, Mistelbach came into the possession of Wolfgang von Polheim, whose heirs sold the property to Gregor Hack von Pornimb. This family undertook the conversion into a moated castle. In 1697, Alexander Hack sold the castle to Hans Konstantin von Kauthen. After the death of Count Thaddäus Adam von Kauthen, Baron Wenzel von Rummerskirch inherited the lordship in 1768. He sold the property in 1772 to the Counts Firmian, who remained the owners until 1887. The Oberösterreichische Volkskreditbank then acquired the castle from Countess Anna von Firmian.
