Michelbach Castle

The Michelbacher Schlösschen is a two-story baroque castle that emerged from a 16th-century moated castle. It is located near the intersections of state roads 2305/2444; only a wall core of the old complex remains. The first castle owner was Rupertus de Willemin, followed by Baron Ferdinand Kaspar Joseph von Wrede, who rebuilt the moated castle into its present form around 1700. He was followed by Marquis du Chastler, who acquired the castle from his predecessor. After another change of ownership, the Frankfurt councilor David Domer bought it in 1862. The municipality of Michelbach acquired it from the Domer/Hendschel family in 1930. From 1949, it was available to the church community for use. It also served as a retirement home until 1980. Since September 2006, it has been given a new purpose through general renovation and conversion into the Museum of the City of Alzenau and also serves as an event venue.
