Meysembourg Castle

The origins of the Meysembourg family date back to the 12th century, when a lady of the house served Countess Ermesinde of Luxembourg. In 1176, Walter de Meysembourg owned the castle, followed by Eberhart de Maysembourg in 1296. The complex suffered destruction in 1443 by Philip the Good but was rebuilt. Further destruction occurred in 1683-84 by Maréchal de Boufflers, leaving only the chapel, the moat, and parts of the outer walls. After the flight of the last heir, Custine de Wiltz, during the French invasion in 1794, the estate changed hands in 1798 through an auction, passing to the Lords of Fischbach, Cassal, and later to Jean-François Reuter Heddersdorf. In 1885, the Prince of Arenberg had a new castle built in the Neo-Renaissance style. Restoration work was carried out in 1971 by architect Charles Arendt.

Meysembourg Castle is situated at an elevation of approximately 334 meters above sea level in the municipality of Larochette-Meysembourg in the Mersch district, Luxembourg, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Meysembourg Castle is currently privately owned and not accessible to the public. It is inhabited by the Spiegelburg family.
