Merlsheim Castle

Merlsheim was first mentioned in a document in 1292 under the names Merlhossen and Merlhusen, which was later also called Merlsen.

At this time, Merlsheim was the castle seat of a knightly family of the same name, which had its heyday in the 13th to 15th centuries. In the middle of the 14th century, the Knights of Oeynhausen acquired property near Merlsheim, and in 1390 Johann the Younger of Oeynhausen bought the village of Merlsheim. Canon C.Ph. von Ketteler had the old fortified complex converted into the current moated castle in 1667–1668. After that, Haus Merlsheim experienced several changes of ownership. Since 1920, the castle and its associated estate have been owned by the von und zur Mühlen family, who moved from Münster to Merlsheim at that time.
