The Castle can be visited

Meggenhorn Castle, a majestic residence, is situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne in the canton of Lucerne, surrounded by extensive gardens. Its prominent location on a hill sloping down to the lake makes it a striking landmark in the region.

History+

Meggenhorn was first documented in 1240 in a treaty between Engelberg Abbey and Count Rudolf III. Parts of the estate belonged to the collegiate church of St. Leodegar until the 16th century. In 1626, the property passed into the possession of Knight Ludwig Meyer von Schauensee. Between 1674 and 1675, a country house with a bell tower was built on the site, which was transformed into a stately residence from 1803 onwards. The current castle building was erected between 1868 and 1870 under the direction of Edouard Hofer-Grosjean from Mulhouse. In 1886, Countess Amélie Celeste Marie Heine-Kohn and her husband Armand Heine acquired the estate. The Countess, who had converted to Catholicism, commissioned the Lucerne architect Heinrich Viktor von Segesser to build a freestanding castle chapel, which was consecrated in 1888 in the Neo-Gothic style. In gratitude for her recovery, she had a more than five-meter-high statue of Christ erected in 1900. After her death in 1915, Mme. Paule Marguerite Laure Juliette Adélaïde Furtado-Heine sold the castle in 1920 to the Zurich industrialist Jakob-Heinrich Frey-Baumann, who had a Welte-Philharmonie organ installed in 1926. Since 1974, the castle has been owned by the municipality of Meggen.
