Mauensee Castle

The history of the site dates back to the Middle Ages, when a defensive structure existed here, forming the center of a feudal lordship. However, nothing remains of this original fortress. Around 1605, a new building was erected on the same spot. Historical views from the 17th and 18th centuries show a castle structure with a rectangular floor plan, surrounded by a wall flanked at the corners by square turrets with pyramid roofs. A house chapel was located in the northeastern area, and a covered wooden walkway led to a tower with latrines in the middle of the north wall. Over the centuries, Mauensee changed hands several times and was eventually acquired by the Eggstein family, who had the surrounding wall, turrets, and chapel removed, so that today only the main building remains. The main limestone gate, dated to 1700, is a prominent Renaissance element.

Mauensee Castle is located on an island in Lake Mauensee, southwest of Sursee, in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 510 m above sea level.

Today, Mauensee Castle is privately owned and not accessible to the public. It presents itself as a three-story building with Gothic windows on the upper floor and a hip roof, with the main gate from 1700 accentuating the facade.
