Marschlins Castel (Landquart)

Marschlins Castle, a former moated castle, is nestled in the plain of the municipality of Landquart in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Its history dates back to the 13th century, and it is considered a remarkable episcopal foundation, distinguished by its unique architecture.
History+
The first documented mention of Marschlins as “castrum Marzhenins” occurred in 1324. The complex, probably built around the mid-13th century, was originally an episcopal foundation. After a fire in 1460, the castle was rebuilt under Ulrich von Brandis. Around 1600, the complex fell into disrepair until Marshal Ulysses von Salis transformed it into a modern castle around 1635. During this process, the old interior buildings were demolished, and the wings were rebuilt. The castle acquired its current form through Eugen Probst, the founder of the Swiss Castle Association, who extensively renovated and rebuilt it in 1905. In the 17th century, Marschlins became the seat of the von Salis family, who subsequently called themselves von Salis-Marschlins. Historically significant is also the cultivation of the first potatoes and corn in the canton of Graubünden in 1717 on the castle estate. From 1799 to 1800, the estate served as accommodation for approximately 10,000 soldiers and 3,000 horses.
