Marienburg Castle, an impressive castle complex, rises majestically in Pattensen-Schulenburg in the Hanover region, Lower Saxony. Originally conceived as a summer residence and hunting lodge, it later became a widow's residence and is now an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic architecture.

History+

Marienburg was built between 1857 and 1867 at the behest of King George V of Hanover. He gifted the castle to his wife, Queen Marie, for her 39th birthday, and both the hill and the castle were named after her. Queen Marie and her daughter Mary inhabited the castle from 1866 to 1867 before going into exile. Subsequently, the castle remained largely vacant for almost 80 years, with only a caretaker looking after it. From 1945, it temporarily served as accommodation for refugees and the family of Ernst August (III.). Today, the castle is privately owned by Hereditary Prince Ernst August of Hanover.

Marienburg Castle is situated at approximately 137 meters above sea level on the Marienberg, southwest of the district of Schulenburg in Pattensen. It is located in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony, Germany.
