Maisenhausen Castle

Maisenhausen Castle, built in the Michelbach outskirts near the district of Albstadt, is a manor house (1753) converted into a villa, which is privately owned and not publicly accessible.

The Maisenhausen estate was first mentioned in a document in 1320. It was probably built by the Lords of Michelbach, who owned the estate until 1423. After several changes of ownership, the estate came into the possession of the Counts of Waldburg-Zeil in 1617. They had the manor house rebuilt in 1753 and converted it into a villa. The castle remained in the possession of the Counts of Waldburg-Zeil until 1806, when it was sold to the Kingdom of Württemberg.

In the following centuries, Maisenhausen Castle changed hands several times. In 1837, it was acquired by the industrialist Carl von Weizsäcker, who had it extensively renovated and expanded. His family owned the castle until 1937, when it was sold to the municipality of Albstadt. The municipality used the castle as a school and later as a retirement home.

In 1995, Maisenhausen Castle was acquired by a private investor who had it extensively restored and converted into a residential building. Since then, the castle has been privately owned and is not open to the public.

Maisenhausen Castle is a two-story building with a hipped roof. The facade is characterized by baroque and neoclassical elements. The main entrance is adorned with a portico supported by four columns. The windows are framed by sandstone surrounds.

The interior of the castle has been extensively renovated and modernized. However, some historical elements, such as the stucco ceilings and the wooden paneling, have been preserved.

Maisenhausen Castle is currently used as a private residence. It is not open to the public. However, the castle can be viewed from the outside.
