Lüftelberg Castle

Lüftelberg Castle in Lüftelberg, a district of the city of Meckenheim in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis (North Rhine-Westphalia), dates back to medieval foundations. The current castle design dates from the 18th century.

The moated castle was first mentioned in 1280. It was the center of the Lordship of Berge, later called Lüftelberge. The castle's name is said to go back to Saint Lüfthildis. The first owner known by name was Dietrich von Volmenstein, who sold the Lordship to the Vischenich brothers in 1358. It was owned by the Lords of Gymnich from 1448 to 1548. After that, it belonged to the Schall von Bell and, from the mid-17th century, to the von Vorst-Lombeck. In 1827, it came to the von Jordan family through inheritance. It was severely damaged during the Second World War. Today, parts are accessible to visitors.
