Lohr Castle

Lohr Castle, also known as Kurmainz Castle, is a listed castle complex in the Lower Franconian town of Lohr am Main in Bavaria.

The foundation stone for Lohr Castle, first documented in 1389, was laid around 1340 by Count Gerhard V of Rieneck at the northwest corner of the old town of Lohr am Main. Initially, it was only a residential tower based on a Flemish model, which was surrounded by a moat and a ring wall since the late 15th century. In the immediate vicinity were the Bandhaus, Forsthaus, Remise, and cellar buildings.

After the death of the last Rieneck Count Philipp III, the Electors of Mainz took over the building as territorial lords in 1559 and gradually gave it its present form. It became the seat of the Elector's chief officials.

In 1814, the castle was taken over by the Kingdom of Bavaria and used as an official residence. Among other things, the Lohr District Office was located there until the regional reform in 1972. In 1913, the building was renovated. In 1936, the Lohr Local History and Spessart Museum was established in the castle's Knights' Hall. This was closed in 1942 and reopened in 1949. Since 1972, the building has housed only the Spessart Museum, which primarily deals with the history of the castle and the Spessart region and is dedicated to the theme "Man and Forest."
