Lohmen Castle

Lohmen is first mentioned in a document in 1292. The name of the place is derived from the Old Slavic lomu (quarry). Lohmen Castle was once called "Pearl of the Wesenitz Valley". The former manor was owned by Ernst and Wolf von Schönburg in 1503. They built the present castle in 1523-24 on the walls of a previous building. In 1619, ownership changed to the Wettins. In 1768, it became an electoral chamber estate. Extensions and alterations were carried out in 1785. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. With the complete renovation of the castle, completed in May 2001, a piece of identity was returned to the historic town center. The castle now houses the municipal office, the tourist information and the library.
