Löwenberg Castle

The earliest mention of the location “Loenber” dates back to 1267 in a document between Rudolf IV of Habsburg and Peter II of Savoy. Archaeological findings, particularly a burial mound, suggest settlement as early as the Bronze Age. In the late Middle Ages, the estate belonged to the Fribourg noble family Velga. After the Battle of Murten in 1476, Jakob Velga's vineyards were exempted from taxes due to severe damage. Sebastian von Diesbach acquired the property in 1511, leaving the first visible traces on the manor house. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Löwenberg changed hands several times and was expanded from a winemaker's house into a country manor. In 1794, it came into the possession of the de Rougemont family, who extensively remodeled and expanded the estate, created an English park, and brought it to its largest extent. In 1973, the estate was sold to the SBB, which built a training center between 1980 and 1982 and restored the historical buildings.

Löwenberg Castle is located at an elevation of approx. 443 m above sea level in Murten, in the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, near Lake Murten.

Today, Löwenberg Castle houses a training center for the SBB, with parts of the historic manor house used for seminars.
