Litzlberg Castle
Litzlberg Castle is located on a small island in Lake Attersee in the market town of Seewalchen am Attersee in the Vöcklabruck district of Upper Austria.
The name was originally Lützelburg and meant small castle (compare lützel with English little = small).
Litzlberg was originally a Mondsee fief. Around 1313, it came into the possession of Winter von Windern (Windner von Slematig). Another mention of Litzelberg occurred in 1498, when the owner Preunhuber sold the castle to Martin von Polheim. In 1603, Weikart von Polheim sold it to Sigmund Engl zu Wagrain. In 1655, Litzberg came to Johann von Khunitz, a regional tax collector from ob der Enns. From him, it passed to the imperial forester Johann Christoph Staindl von Plötzened. In 1664, Elias von Seeau bought the small castle on the 6000 m² island from him. Around 1769, Litzlberg passed to Count Johann Gottlieb von Clam. In 1802, Litzlberg came to the court advocate Dr. Josef Preuer, then to Josef Weichs (1814).

As can be seen in Georg Matthäus Vischer's engraving from 1674, Litzlberg was a stately complex with a square tower, at whose corners watchtowers were attached. In addition, there was a round tower with an onion dome. A wooden bridge led to the castle, and a palisade fence in the lake further protected the castle. In 1780, the already ruinous masonry of the castle, except for a corner turret, was removed and the material was used to rebuild the burnt-down market of Schörfling.
The new building in the Historicist style dates from after 1896. The Viennese banker von Springer had the new country estate built here. The footbridge to the island was built in 1917. Gustav Klimt spent several summers here and painted a number of Attersee pictures.
Regarding the new building, there were several changes of ownership, including: Baron E. von Springer (1895-1897), the steel industrialist Böhler and his descendants. In 1974, it was acquired by the Linz brick manufacturer Prof. Karl Leitl († 1982). The island and castle are still privately owned by the Leitl family today and are not publicly accessible. The small castle is now completely renovated and is a jewel in Lake Attersee.
