Liebenau Castle

Liebenau Castle refers to the baroque manor house of an estate in the small North Hessian town of Liebenau in the district of Kassel. It stands on Burggasse on the site of a former moated castle.

The predecessor complex was built around 1293 and was successively owned by the Lords of Pappenheim, Löwenstein-Westerburg, and Spiegel von Desenberg, who held it as vassals of the Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn. The castle was destroyed around 1465 during the Hessian-Paderborn Feud between the Diocese of Paderborn and Landgrave Ludwig II of Hesse. In the peace treaty concluded two years later, Paderborn had to cede the castle and the town of Liebenau to the Landgrave. The Liebenau fortification then lost its strategic value and gradually fell into disrepair. By 1572, it no longer existed.

Liebenau Castle was built on the remains of the former moated castle between 1754 and 1758 by the Rabe von Pappenheim family. The manor house has a mansard roof and is still owned by the family today. Additions were made to it in the 19th century.
